PhD: Mainstreaming Nature-Based Solutions Through Co-Creation in Rural Regions

Utrecht University invites applications for a fully funded PhD position focused on mainstreaming nature-based solutions through co-creation, based in the Department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning within the Faculty of Geosciences. This research opportunity is ideal for candidates passionate about transdisciplinary approaches to climate resilience, sustainability, and inclusive governance in rural regions. The project aims to develop, apply, and evaluate novel co-creation methodologies that integrate emotions, values, and digital technologies (such as XR) to foster climate adaptation and biodiversity restoration in rural communities. The PhD researcher will address key frontiers in co-creation: understanding how emotions and values influence transformations in thinking, doing, and relating to nature-based solutions, and exploring how digital technologies can facilitate participatory processes and the mainstreaming of these solutions. The empirical component involves action research in four real-life case studies across Greece, Cyprus, Finland, and the United Kingdom, generating actionable knowledge for policy and practice. The position also includes contributing one day per week to the European NURISH project, which supports climate resilience and digital innovation in rural areas, aligning with the EU’s Vision for Rural Areas and the European Green Deal. Supervision is provided by Prof. Dr. Niki Frantzeskaki, Assistant Prof. Dr. Katharina Hölscher, and Assistant Prof. Martijn Kuller, all experts in sustainability, governance, and participatory planning. The Faculty of Geosciences at Utrecht University is renowned for its interdisciplinary research and commitment to sustainability, with a strong focus on urban and regional futures, social inclusion, and innovative governance. The position offers a four-year contract (0.8–1.0 FTE), with a competitive gross monthly salary (€3,059–€3,881 full-time), holiday and year-end bonuses, pension scheme, flexible employment terms, and professional development opportunities. Utrecht University fosters a diverse, inclusive, and supportive environment for all staff and students. Eligibility requires a Master’s degree in a relevant field (Urban Planning, Environmental Planning, Geography, Political Science, Policy Studies, Sustainability Science, or related), excellent research and ethical practices, experience with qualitative methods (interviews, workshops, focus groups), and strong English proficiency. Knowledge of Greek or Finnish is desirable. Candidates should demonstrate independence, teamwork, time management, and communication skills. Familiarity with transdisciplinary research, climate adaptation, and European environmental policies is advantageous. Applications must be submitted via the official Utrecht University platform by 15 February 2026, including a CV, motivation letter (max 1 page), and a sample of sole-authored writing. Interviews are scheduled for 26 February 2026, with the position starting on 1 April 2026. Only complete, timely, English-language applications will be considered, and prior contact with supervisors is not permitted. For further details, visit the official job posting or contact Prof. Dr. Niki Frantzeskaki at [email protected].
