PhD in Quantum Communication Networks at Manchester Metropolitan University

Manchester Metropolitan University is inviting applications for a funded PhD position in the field of quantum communication networks, supervised by Dr Masoud Ghalaii. This ambitious project aims to advance the development of large-scale quantum communication infrastructure, focusing on practical deployment pathways for secure quantum networks. The research will investigate optical quantum repeaters for long-distance secure quantum key distribution (QKD), with the PhD candidate developing theoretical frameworks to analyze repeater architectures, including amplifier-enhanced and memory-assisted protocols. A key aspect of the project is the creation of experiment-ready models that rigorously account for realistic device imperfections, bridging the gap between theoretical research and practical implementation. The opportunity is open to both UK (home) and international applicants who wish to study full-time and on campus. The successful candidate will join a vibrant research environment in the Department of Computing and Mathematics at Manchester Metropolitan University, with potential collaboration with the University of Leeds. The project is ideal for students with a strong background in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related disciplines, and who are motivated to contribute to the rapidly evolving field of quantum technologies. Funding: The position covers home tuition fees (£5,006 for 2025/26) for 3.5 years. International students are eligible but must pay the difference between home and international tuition fees (Band 2 for 2025/26). A standard UKRI stipend of £20,780 for the academic year 2025/26 is provided for the duration of the award. Eligibility: Applicants should have a first or upper second class (2:1) honours degree from a UK university or an equivalent qualification (or be close to completing) in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline. Essential skills include strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively. Desirable skills include knowledge of optics, communications, quantum optics, quantum communications, and familiarity with programming languages such as MATLAB or Python.
