Postdoctoral Researcher in AI, Control, and LLMs for Space Engine Health Prognostics (France)

This is an urgent postdoctoral opportunity at CRAN (CNRS/Université de Lorraine) in collaboration with the French Space Agency (CNES), focused on AI and control for space applications. The research project centers on developing health-aware control learning for reusable rocket engines, specifically within the PROMETHEUS engine context. The goal is to reduce costs and carbon footprint by extending the remaining useful life (RUL) of engines through advanced prognostic modules and control reconfiguration, leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) such as GPT, LLAMA, and other transformer-based architectures. The successful candidate will work on integrating LLMs for health monitoring and prognostics, using deep learning and time series analysis to predict engine degradation and optimize control strategies. The project involves collaboration with CNES and will be based at CRAN, Polytech Nancy, France. The position is fully funded for two years (September 2026 – September 2028) with a competitive CNES postdoctoral salary. Applicants should hold a PhD in Computer Science, AI, Control Theory, Prognostics and Health Management, NLP, or related fields. Required skills include proficiency in Python and Matlab, with a strong background in deep learning, time series forecasting, and experience with LLMs or transformers for sequential data. A C1 level of English is appreciated. The project offers the opportunity to publish in high-impact journals and collaborate with leading experts, Dr. Mayank Shekhar JHA and Prof. Didier THEILLIOL. To apply, candidates should contact the supervisors directly via the provided emails or through the official university links. This is an excellent opportunity for researchers interested in AI, control systems, health monitoring, and space technology to contribute to cutting-edge advancements in reusable engine technology.
