PhD Studentship in Enterobacter Infections and Macrophage Biology at Queen's University Belfast

Queen's University Belfast is offering two Department for the Economy studentships for international PhD students interested in cutting-edge research on Enterobacter infections. The project, led by Professor Miguel A. Valvano, focuses on understanding how Enterobacter clinical isolates survive within human macrophages. Recent discoveries in the lab have shown that Enterobacter can hide inside macrophages, remaining dormant and evading both immune responses and antibiotic treatments. This research aims to characterize the Enterobacter-containing vacuole (EcV) in macrophages using state-of-the-art confocal microscopy and to identify bacterial genes essential for intramacrophage survival through high-throughput screens and targeted gene deletions. Applicants must be full-time international Postgraduate Taught students enrolled at Queen’s University Belfast between 1 October 2024 and 31 January 2026, and subject to international tuition fees. A strong background in microbiology, cell biology, or related fields is preferred, and experience with confocal microscopy, bacterial genetics, or infectious disease research will be advantageous. The studentship covers international tuition fees, but no stipend or additional financial support is specified. This opportunity is ideal for students passionate about infectious diseases, antibiotic resistance, and host-pathogen interactions. The research has significant implications for developing new treatments for Enterobacter infections and improving patient outcomes. Interested candidates should review the application details at the provided link and prepare their documents for online submission through the Queen’s University Belfast portal.
