2 Postdoctoral Researchers in Multimodal Sensing (Smart Video Sensorization & Distributed Edge AI)

The University of Oulu, a leading multidisciplinary research university in Finland, is seeking two postdoctoral researchers to join the Center for Machine Vision and Signal Analysis (CMVS) at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. CMVS is renowned for its pioneering research in computer vision, biosignal analysis, and artificial intelligence, with strong international collaborations and a focus on impactful applications in healthcare, industry, and digital infrastructures. The two available postdoctoral positions are embedded in distinct, high-profile research projects. The first position, within the Smart Video Sensorization for Secure Healthcare Monitoring (SViSenS) project, centers on developing privacy-preserving, AI-driven video-based monitoring technologies for healthcare. The successful candidate will design and implement novel computer vision and machine learning methods for sensorized cameras, extracting medically relevant features without transmitting raw video. Responsibilities include evaluating algorithms in real-time experimental settings, optimizing for privacy, and collaborating with healthcare professionals to validate solutions in use cases such as respiratory infections, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and psychiatric conditions. The role also involves co-supervising doctoral and Master’s students and contributing to high-quality scientific publications. The second position, part of the ResilientEdge project (an Interreg Aurora collaboration between Finland and Sweden), focuses on secure, adaptable, and scalable edge computing frameworks for SMEs in manufacturing, logistics, energy, and smart buildings. The postdoctoral researcher will design and implement resilient distributed AI methods for edge computing, including federated learning and agentic AI, and develop privacy-preserving, adaptive decision-making mechanisms for edge-to-cloud infrastructures. Validation of solutions in real SME use cases, ensuring interoperability, security, and scalability in cross-border testbeds, is a key aspect. The candidate will engage with regional and cross-border partners, co-develop use cases and pilots, co-supervise junior researchers and students, and disseminate results through publications and stakeholder workshops. Both positions offer the support of an experienced and enthusiastic team, a range of staff benefits including wellness programs, and opportunities for professional development and career growth. The University of Oulu provides a flexible and inclusive work environment, recognized for excellence in research and researcher development. The positions are full-time, fixed-term for three years, with a starting gross salary of approximately 3700-4300 € per month, plus performance-based components. Applicants must hold a relevant doctoral degree (completed within the last 10 years), demonstrate expertise in computer vision, machine learning, biosignal analysis, distributed AI, or edge computing, and possess strong communication and teamwork skills. Applications are welcome from candidates of all backgrounds. The application deadline is November 9, 2025, and applications should be submitted online with all required documents.
