PhD Position in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Drug Development at Uppsala University

Uppsala University is offering a PhD position in Pharmaceutical Sciences, focusing on drug development and experimental as well as translational research. The doctoral project is based in the Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences, an interdisciplinary environment at the heart of Uppsala's Biomedicine Centre, and is affiliated with the Cell Biology and Biotechnology research group. The research centers on a novel method for detecting single-strand breaks (SSB) in DNA, enabling new studies of SSB during cellular processes and in response to damage such as radiation. The project aims to determine the necessity of SSB formation upstream of transcription start sites for efficient transcription, identify the enzymes responsible, and investigate drug candidates that inhibit SSB formation to downregulate gene expression. Applicants must hold a master's degree in pharmaceutical, medical, or natural sciences, or have equivalent qualifications (at least 240 ECTS credits, with 60 at advanced level and an independent project). Proficiency in English is required. Experience with molecular biology techniques (CRISPR/Cas9, DNA sequencing, cloning) is advantageous, as is knowledge of cell biology and DNA repair. Selection is based on academic qualifications, relevant coursework, research experience, and personal suitability, including analytical skills, accuracy, flexibility, and teamwork. The position is full-time and fixed-term, with a monthly salary according to Uppsala University's guidelines. The doctoral program typically lasts four years (up to five with departmental duties). The application deadline is March 5, 2026. Applications should be submitted via the university's recruitment system and must include a cover letter, CV, degree certificates, transcripts, thesis, and references. For more information, contact Docent Johan Heldin or Professor Ola Söderberg. This is an excellent opportunity to join one of Europe's leading research environments in pharmaceutical sciences, with access to state-of-the-art laboratories and a vibrant academic community. The university is recognized for its high-quality research and supportive work environment, as evidenced by its "HR Excellence in Research" award from the EU Commission.
