PhD in Chemistry – Rotaxane-based Molecular Switches for Antibacterial Photodynamic Therapy

This PhD position at Nantes Université, within the CEISAM UMR-CNRS 6230 laboratory, offers an exciting opportunity to advance research in rotaxane-based molecular switches for antibacterial photodynamic therapy. The project centers on the synthesis and characterization of Bodipy dye-based rotaxanes, designed to act as stimulus-responsive molecular switches with applications in photomedicine. These innovative structures will be engineered to modulate their fluorescence and photosensitizing properties, enabling targeted destruction of pathogens through photodynamic therapy. The research will involve three main objectives: synthesizing and characterizing a library of switchable rotaxanes, investigating the effect of external heavy atoms on the generation of reactive oxygen species, and applying these architectures in antibacterial photodynamic therapy. The project is supported by preliminary results and aims to deliver breakthroughs in both synthetic chemistry and the development of new therapeutic agents. As a PhD student, you will join the CORAIL team (Catalysis, ORganometallic chemistry And synthesIs of Ligands), led by CNRS Research Director Vincent Coeffard and Assistant Professor Pierrick Nun. The team is recognized nationally and internationally for its expertise in synthetic organic chemistry, asymmetric organocatalysis, and photooxygenation. You will benefit from a stimulating research environment, state-of-the-art facilities, and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, including with the University of Limoges team specializing in antibacterial photodynamic therapy. Eligibility requires a Master’s degree or equivalent in chemistry, with strong skills in organic synthesis and supramolecular chemistry. Experience in photochemistry or photodynamic therapy is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate initiative, autonomy, and teamwork, and possess a good command of English. Teaching opportunities may be available, and training is a priority for supervisors. To apply, submit a detailed CV, cover letter, transcripts, and a letter of appreciation from your Master’s research internship supervisor. Applications are accepted online until 15 May 2026. Pre-selected candidates will be invited for an interview with the thesis director and Graduate School representatives. For further information, visit the CEISAM laboratory website or contact the supervisors directly. This position is not funded by the EU Research Framework Programme. Funding details are not specified in the announcement. The research will be conducted full-time (35 hours per week) at the Faculty of Fundamental and Applied Sciences site in Nantes, France.
