PhD in Sustainable Rurbanity: Rurban FoodWaste, Human Geography & Animal Sciences (India–Germany)

The Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) invites applications for a four-year Doctoral Researcher position as part of the DFG-funded Research Unit “Sustainable Rurbanity – Resources, Society, and Regulatory Systems.” This interdisciplinary project, titled “Rurban FoodWaste – Sustainability potential of food waste as livestock feed in Indian rurban contexts,” integrates Human Geography and Animal Sciences perspectives. The research will focus on the sustainability potential of food waste as livestock feed in Indian rurban (rural-urban) contexts, with the primary place of employment at ATREE in Bengaluru and extended fieldwork in and around the city. The successful candidate will register for doctoral studies at a German university, subject to their entry criteria (CGPA above 3 out of 4 or equivalent) and assessment matrices. The project involves reviewing and analyzing literature, preparing and conducting social science fieldwork on food waste flows and revalorisation, collaborating with academic partners in India and Germany, participating in seminars, workshops, and international conferences, analyzing collected data, preparing scientific articles, and general project management tasks. Applicants must have a postgraduate degree in geography, development studies, social sciences, economics, agricultural sciences, or related fields. Fluency in Kannada and English, experience in qualitative and/or quantitative social science research, excellent communication skills, and willingness to work in an interdisciplinary, international team are required. Candidates should also be willing to conduct extended fieldwork in India. Previous fieldwork experience and knowledge of food systems, value chains, circular economy, or livelihoods are desirable. The position offers a challenging and diverse job in an interdisciplinary research environment, the possibility of pursuing a PhD with close supervision, integration into scientific networks, flexible working conditions, and access to training opportunities at ATREE and partner institutions. ATREE is committed to diversity and equal opportunities, and encourages applications from all backgrounds. Severely disabled applicants will be given preferential consideration if equally qualified. To apply, send your application (cover letter, CV, certificates, references with contact details) in a single PDF file by email to Prof. Dr. Soubadra Devy at [email protected], quoting reference number FOR5903. The application deadline is 8 March 2026. For more information, visit www.atree.org/rurbanfoodwaste or the project website at www.uni-kassel.de/go/for-5903 .
