EngD position: Design tool for tire-snow performance predictions

The University of Twente invites applications for an EngD position focused on developing a design tool for tire-snow performance predictions. This opportunity is based within the Faculty of Engineering Technology, which is renowned for its multidisciplinary research and education in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Industrial Design Engineering. The project addresses the challenges of winter tire development, particularly the complexities of mold production and the variability of snow quality, which complicate the comparison between outdoor and laboratory test results. To overcome these challenges, the research will advance numerical simulation tools that estimate the effects of design changes on tire performance, especially during the early stages of new tire development. The project will involve comparing and validating advanced numerical models, including Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE), Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL), and Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) methods, specifically for snowy conditions. A key aspect will be investigating the speed, accuracy, and convergence of these models and integrating them within Apollo’s simulation environment to ensure robust tire prototyping. The ultimate goal is to develop a comprehensive numerical model for tire-snow interaction, implementing coupled models for rubber-snow interaction using Abaqus software. The selected solution will be integrated into Apollo’s professional environment, with experimental validation of snow performance predictions and further model improvements. The project will culminate in the design and implementation of a robust workflow and predictive design tool for winter tire development. Applicants should possess an MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Civil Engineering, or a related field. Essential skills include expertise in the Finite Element Method (FEM), experience with numerical simulation tools such as Abaqus and UMAT, and proficiency in coding with Python and Fortran. The position offers a stimulating, international environment with excellent facilities for professional and personal development, sports, and leisure. The Faculty of Engineering Technology is part of a ‘people-first’ university of technology, recognized internationally for its contributions to smart production, processes, and devices across domains such as Health Technology, Maintenance, Smart Regions, Smart Industry, and Sustainable Resources. To apply, submit your application by 30th April 2026 via the University of Twente’s online portal. Your application should include a cover letter (maximum one A4 page), a detailed CV, and contact details for at least two references. Interviews are scheduled for the last two weeks of May, and screening is part of the procedure. For further information, contact Dr. Hongyang Cheng ([email protected]) or Prof.dr. Stefan Luding ([email protected]). This EngD position is ideal for candidates interested in advanced computational modeling, materials engineering, and the practical challenges of tire design for winter conditions. The University of Twente provides a dynamic ecosystem with enthusiastic colleagues and close connections to leading research institutes such as Mesa+ Institute, TechMed Center, and Digital Society Institute.
