Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Bat Ecology, Socio-Economic Services, and Plant-Soil Microbiome at University of Southampton
The University of Southampton's School of Biological Sciences is offering two 3-year postdoctoral research fellowships as part of a Leverhulme Trust–funded project focused on the ecological and socio-economic importance of bat guano in Mexico. The project is highly interdisciplinary, integrating bat ecology, cave ecosystems, plant-soil microbiome research, and social science to understand how bat guano supports agriculture and rural livelihoods, and how it can be managed sustainably. One postdoc will join William L King's group, focusing on plant and soil microbiology/microbiome, while the other will join Veronica Zamora-Gutierrez's group, focusing on bat ecology and ecosystem services. Both positions involve significant fieldwork in Mexico, collaboration with UK and Mexican partners, and engagement with conservation organizations and government agencies.
Applicants should have a completed PhD in ecology, conservation biology, environmental science, environmental economics, or a related field. Experience in field-based research, a strong interest in bats, ecology, and/or socio-ecological systems, and excellent communication skills in English are required. Spanish language skills are desirable, or a willingness to learn. Candidates must be willing and able to undertake extended international fieldwork and work across cultural and disciplinary boundaries.
