PhD Scholarship in Advanced Composite Repairs

This PhD scholarship at Monash University offers an exciting opportunity to advance the science of composite repairs for critical aircraft structures. The project aims to develop a novel resin-injection hybrid repair concept that restores joint strength and function, enabling severely damaged primary composite structures to be certified under current regulations. The research will be conducted at the Clayton campus within the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, under the supervision of Professor W.K. Chiu. The successful candidate will receive a tax-free stipend of $37,145 per annum (2026 full-time rate), indexed annually, with additional support for project resources and conference presentations. The position is a 3-year fixed-term appointment and requires full-time, on-campus enrolment. The research will focus on fundamental sciences and engineering principles, including mechanical and materials engineering, composite manufacturing, and certification policy. The project is ideal for candidates interested in structural integrity, repair technology, and aerospace applications. Applicants must meet Monash University’s PhD admission criteria, including holding a research-based Honours or Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related field. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, self-motivation, and the ability to work within a high-performing research group are essential. Preference will be given to candidates with a record of publishing in scientific journals. English-language proficiency is required, and interviews will be conducted in English. Applicants who already hold a PhD are not eligible. During their doctoral studies, the student will participate in reading groups, language study meetings, and assist with organising international conferences, public events, and workshops to build their academic profile and networks. The successful applicant is expected to enrol by April 2026. To apply, submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) as a single PDF attachment to [email protected], including a cover letter, CV, academic record, contact details of two referees, evidence of English proficiency, and a one-page write-up on composite repairs and resin injection. Review Monash University’s eligibility requirements before applying. Applications close on 3 April 2026. For further information, visit the application link or contact Professor W.K. Chiu at [email protected].
