PhD and MS Positions in Machine Learning, Multi-Agent Systems, and Aerospace Engineering at University of South Florida

The Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at the University of South Florida (USF) is offering fully funded PhD and MS positions starting in Fall 2026. Led by Assistant Professor Xiaoyu Liu, the research group focuses on cutting-edge topics such as machine learning, multi-agent systems, generative agents, and large language models (LLMs) for engineering applications. The primary emphasis is on space exploration and complex aerospace systems, including human–robot teaming, reinforcement learning, and computational frameworks for mission planning and system-of-systems analysis. USF's MAE department is rapidly expanding and is currently ranked #88 in U.S. News. The group’s research projects include developing reinforcement learning-based frameworks for multi-agent teaming in space missions, computational models for assessing mission outcomes with humans and robots, and automated image localization for building reconnaissance. The lab also works on advanced information fusion algorithms for post-event building damage assessment and early design decision frameworks for deep space habitats. Applicants should have a strong background in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, computer science, or related fields. Experience with machine learning, multi-agent systems, or space mission planning is preferred. Candidates must meet the University of South Florida's graduate admission requirements for PhD or MS programs. Strong programming skills and research interest in the listed areas are advantageous. These positions are fully funded, covering tuition and providing a stipend. Interested students are encouraged to contact Prof. Xiaoyu Liu at [email protected] and review the research group website for more information. The application deadline for Fall 2026 is December 28, 2025.
