VIB-Center for Inflammation Research

PhD Candidate in Spatial Systems Biology for Translational Oncology

Join a dynamic and collaborative research program at the VIB-Center for Inflammation Research, working with the Guilliams, Saelens, and Saeys teams. This PhD project focuses on developing and applying computational algorithms to link clinical phenotypes of metastasis with molecular phenotypes in mouse models. Metastases are known to exhibit distinct spatial growth patterns, which correlate with therapy efficiency and patient survival, yet the underlying drivers of these patterns remain unclear. The tumor microenvironment is implicated, and in vivo models offer unique opportunities to dissect the mechanisms behind different cell states. As a PhD candidate, you will connect clinically relevant phenotypes to murine microenvironments using high-resolution spatial omics techniques. Your work will prioritize molecular factors that may drive immune cell states, followed by in vivo validation to determine their impact on aberrant cell states and growth patterns. You will be embedded in both experimental and computational teams, fostering an interdisciplinary environment with expertise in computational modelling and experimental biology. This collaborative atmosphere has led to numerous past successes, as highlighted in several referenced publications. The ideal candidate holds a Master's degree in bioinformatics, biomedicine, bioengineering, biotechnology, or related fields. Essential qualifications include programming experience in Python, strong communication skills, fluency in English, and a collaborative personality with attention to detail. Experience in imaging or spatial omics data analysis and a background in biomedicine and digital pathology are advantageous but not mandatory. The position offers a competitive salary, full benefits, and access to state-of-the-art computing infrastructure. The PhD is fully funded for four years, with encouragement to apply for personal funding. The VIB-Center is committed to diversity and inclusion, welcoming applicants from all backgrounds and identities, and providing equal opportunities in a supportive environment. To apply, submit your application online via the VIB application tool, including a motivation letter (1-1.5 pages), curriculum vitae, and university degree certificates. For further information, you may contact Prof. Wouter Saelens, Prof. Yvan Saeys, or Prof. Martin Guilliams by email.
