The University of Antwerp invites applications for a full-time doctoral scholarship in heritage sciences, focusing on nature-based solutions for heritage buildings. This position is part of the Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network ‘CHARM’, which aims to advance sustainable conservation of architectural heritage through resilient methods addressing hydro-climate factors. The research will be conducted within the Built Heritage Lab of the Antwerp Cultural Heritage Sciences group, Faculty of Design Sciences.

The doctoral project centers on the use of green facades as nature-based solutions for heritage buildings. Key objectives include studying the impact of plant species (deciduous and evergreen) on microclimate and hygrothermal conditions of walls, analyzing plant density effects on moisture and sheltering under wind-driven rain, optimizing vertical greening systems for protection and regulation, investigating water management inside facades using vegetation, and performing heritage impact assessments to enhance visual, biodiversity, and health outcomes for residents. Research will be conducted both in laboratory and on-site settings, with the aim of developing decision-support tools for preventive conservation.

As a doctoral candidate, you will actively prepare and defend a PhD thesis, participate in consortium activities and regular training sessions, follow the Antwerp Doctoral School training program, and undertake a 4-month research stay at NTNU in Norway at the end of year 2. You will publish scientific articles, attend international conferences, and contribute to teaching and research support tasks for ARCHES. Collaboration with researchers from the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage in Belgium (KIK-IRPA) is integral to the project.

Applicants must hold a Master degree in Engineering, Sciences, or equivalent by the start date and must not have a doctoral degree at recruitment. Excellent academic results, proficiency in data processing and analysis tools (such as Rstudio), and a strong interest in built heritage and nature-based solutions are required. Adequate English proficiency is necessary, with a C1 certificate considered advantageous. Candidates must comply with Horizon Europe MSCA-DN mobility rules, which restrict prior residence or activity in Belgium. Teaching and research competences should align with the University’s vision and policies, and candidates should demonstrate quality, integrity, creativity, and cooperation.

The scholarship is fully funded for 36 months under MSCA-DN, with possible extension up to 12 months. Remuneration is competitive, based on MSCA allowances, and includes benefits such as ecocheques, internet-connectivity allowance, bicycle allowance or public transport reimbursement, and funding for training and international research events. The working environment is dynamic and stimulating, located at Campus Mutsaard – City Campus UAntwerpen.
