The African German Centre of Excellence UKUDLA is inviting applications for the 2026 UKUDLA Doctoral Scholarships, a fully funded PhD opportunity for African candidates. This program offers 16 research topics spanning sustainable agriculture, food safety, nutrition, climate resilience, and data-driven approaches to agri-food systems. The scholarships are designed to support doctoral research in South Africa and Malawi, in partnership with leading institutions such as the University of the Western Cape, University of Mpumalanga, University of Pretoria, and Lilongwe University of Natural and Agricultural Sciences. A 6-month research exchange at the University of Hohenheim in Germany is included.

Funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity (BMLEH), Germany, the scholarship covers a monthly stipend (EUR 900 or EUR 300 for Malawi), rent subsidy, medical aid, and research expenses. Tuition fees are waived in exchange for 10 hours per week of work at the host university. The program duration is up to 42 months, with opportunities for additional training, workshops, and summer schools through the UKUDLA Graduate Centre.

Eligibility requires a master’s degree in a field related to food systems or data science, with a minimum average of 68% (Second Class/Upper Division or equivalent), and completion of the last degree within the past 6 years. Applicants must be nationals or permanent residents of an African country, have not started a doctoral degree, and demonstrate English proficiency (TOEFL 79/80, IELTS Band 6, or English as the language of instruction since secondary school). Candidates must submit a research proposal, academic transcripts, CV, proof of English proficiency, and at least one academic reference. Additional requirements may apply depending on the chosen host university.
