About this position
The Griffith School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, in partnership with the Griffith Criminology Institute, is offering a fully funded PhD scholarship focused on road safety and deterrence theory. This project aims to enhance our understanding of drug and alcohol-impaired driving, examining factors such as emboldening, punishment avoidance, and the fading impact of sanctions on driver behavior. The research will explore why traditional deterrence approaches may be less effective for young drivers and investigate differences between younger and older impaired drivers.
Applicants should have a strong academic record and research background, with experience in both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Essential skills include effective communication, teamwork, independence, resilience, and time management. A background in criminology, psychology, or related disciplines is desirable. The scholarship is open to both domestic and international candidates, with international applicants required to meet English language proficiency standards (IELTS 6.5 overall, no band less than 6.0; or equivalent TOEFL scores).
The scholarship provides an annual stipend of $35,656 (indexed) for up to three years, and international students will also receive tuition coverage. The research will be conducted at Griffith University’s Brisbane South (Nathan) campus, with opportunities to collaborate with industry and leading researchers in one of the world’s top criminology research communities. The project is designed to inform and improve policing practices and road safety outcomes.
To apply, submit an expression of interest by email including a statement of suitability, sample of written work, evidence of academic qualifications, a CV (using the Griffith template), and names of two referees. The deadline for expressions of interest is 13 April 2026. For project-related inquiries, contact Associate Professor Lyndel Bates at [email protected]
