About this position

This PhD opportunity at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) offers a cutting-edge research project focused on developing an accurate 3D tracking framework for virtual surgery simulation. As digital medicine and virtual surgery become increasingly important in medical education and clinical practice, the need for robust, markerless tracking of surgical instruments in open surgery simulation is critical. The project aims to address these challenges by investigating multimodal region-based pose estimation and constructing kinematic models for surgical instruments. Two main objectives guide the research: (1) establishing a motion model based on local kinematic structure constraints to enable precise 3D reconstruction and tracking of instrument postures, and (2) exploring non-rigid motion mechanisms to expand the paradigm of instrument-tissue interaction using advanced algorithms and models. The outcomes are expected to significantly advance virtual-real fusion interaction in extended reality environments, with broad applications in medical simulation and training.

Students will work under the supervision of Dr. Nan Xiang (principal supervisor, XJTLU), Dr. Yushan Pan (XJTLU), and Dr. Yi Dong (University of Liverpool), benefiting from expertise in computer science, biomedical engineering, and applied mathematics. The majority of research will be conducted at XJTLU in Suzhou, China, with the possibility of a short-term research visit to the University of Liverpool if required by the project. Upon successful completion, the PhD degree will be awarded by the University of Liverpool (UK).

The studentship provides full tuition coverage for three years (RMB 99,000 per annum) and up to RMB 16,500 for international conference participation. Applicants should have a first class or upper second class honours degree, or a master's degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Biomedical Engineering, or Digital Media Technology. Candidates from top Chinese universities (985/211/Double First-Class) and those with publications are especially encouraged. Proficiency in English is required, with an IELTS score of 6.5 or above (or equivalent) for non-native speakers.
