Description

Birmingham City University is offering six fully funded PhD studentships for UK/Home Students through the Doctoral Landscape Awards, an AHRC-funded initiative aimed at fostering a vibrant and inclusive doctoral research culture in the arts and humanities. The Department of English and Media invites applications from candidates whose research interests align with creative writing, English linguistics, English literature, media and cultural studies, journalism, cultural activism, creative industries, equality and diversity in media, games culture, film, gender and sexuality, history, heritage and archives, popular music, and South Asian media. The scheme provides expert supervision, access to university and regional facilities, cohort events, and professional development opportunities. Each year, one studentship is dedicated to a candidate from a Global Majority background, continuing BCU’s commitment to widening participation. Applicants must be UK/Home Students eligible for Home Tuition Fees, not already hold a doctoral qualification, and propose research within AHRC’s primary subject areas. Funding includes home tuition fees and a 3.5-year tax-free stipend at the UKRI minimum rate (£20,780 per annum for 2025/26), with additional opportunities for placements and development. Part-time study is possible. The application process involves submitting an Expression of Interest (optional, deadline 2025-11-17), followed by a full application including the BCU Online Application Form, Doctoral Landscape Award Funding Application Form, two references, and copies of higher education certificates and transcripts by 2026-01-27 noon UK time. For further details, applicants are encouraged to visit the BCU DLA webpage and contact the department for enquiries.
