An exciting chance to join the University of Surrey on an EPSRC – Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom funded PhD studentship starting January 2026.
This project will pioneer Digital Commentary Driving (DCD) – a breakthrough framework to make autonomous vehicles more transparent, safe, and regulator-ready.
You will tackle challenges at the frontier of AI, robotics, and safety assurance, such as:
?? Developing AI-driven methods to generate and analyse Digital Commentary Driving data
?? Investigating how DCD can provide sufficient evidence for detecting near-misses and edge cases
?? Creating realistic near-miss scenarios to evaluate system trustworthiness
?? Advancing explainable and trusted AI approaches for AV certification
You’ll work with:

Dr Nick Reed and Paul Spence (Distinguished expert in AV safety)
Colleagues from the Department for Transport (DfT)
