About this position

The Quantum Materials for Renewable Energy Applications Laboratory in the Department of Chemistry at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) is searching for a highly motivated doctoral student to screen the electrical and thermal properties of quantum materials. The position is fully funded, and the starting date is January, May or September 2025. Earlier starting dates might be possible and can be discussed. Note, the candidate can obtain a PhD in Chemistry or Physics .

The project goals include (1) the development of instruments to measure electrical and thermal properties at high temperature, and (2) the synthesis, characterization, and measurements of quantum materials.

The student will learn to develop instruments to measure the electron and heat flow as function of temperature. In this sense, the student will write Python scripts to control multimeters and temperature controllers. Furthermore, the potential candidate will learn skills to synthesize, characterize, and measure quantum materials.

The student will disseminate their findings in high-impact journals and international conferences. During their training, the student will learn to efficiently communicate their work.

Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree in applied science (Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science) and engineering
  • Advanced understanding of materials chemistry and physical properties
  • Advanced knowledge in Python
  • Strong English communication skills in writing and speaking.

Strongly recommended but not required.

  • Knowledge in instrument development
  • Experimental background in materials synthesis and characterization
  • Advanced knowledge of electrical and thermal properties
