About this position
Karolinska Institutet, one of the world's leading medical universities, invites applications for a Doctoral (PhD) student position in adipocyte systems biology. The position is based in the Rydén and Mejhert Laboratory, which investigates how alterations in human white adipocyte function contribute to cardiometabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and atherosclerosis. The research group comprises postdoctoral fellows, PhD and master’s students, and technical staff, and is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities at KI Campus (Biomedicum) and Karolinska University Hospital, Huddinge.
The doctoral project focuses on understanding how hormonal signals reshape the spatial organization of proteins in human adipocytes and regulate lipid metabolism. Specifically, the project aims to elucidate how hormone-regulated protein translocation between intracellular compartments controls adipocyte lipid turnover, including lipogenesis and lipolysis. The student will use human adipocyte models to generate global maps of hormone-induced protein translocation in response to metabolic hormones (insulin, catecholamines, atrial natriuretic peptide) by combining subcellular fractionation with mass spectrometry-based proteomics. Building on these datasets, specific proteins will be perturbed using Cas9-mediated gene knockout or protein tethering, and the consequences for adipocyte function will be systematically assessed. Readouts include lipolysis and lipogenesis assays, metabolic flux measurements, and analyses of intracellular signaling pathways. Key findings will be evaluated in human adipose tissue biopsies from a clinical cohort, enabling translation to cardiometabolic disease.
The student will receive broad training in cell culture, genome engineering, live-cell imaging, biochemical assays, proteomics, and computational data analysis, and will collaborate with colleagues at Helmholtz Zentrum München. The environment is creative and inspiring, with opportunities for international exchanges and access to a wide range of elective courses. The position is a full-time doctoral studentship for up to four years, with a contractual monthly salary, free access to the university gym, and medical care reimbursements.
Eligibility requires a master’s degree or equivalent, proficiency in English (English B/English 6), and a strong background in molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, or related discipline. Previous laboratory research experience is expected. Skills in genome editing, live-cell imaging, biochemical assays, and coding (R or Python) are advantageous. The ideal candidate is motivated, analytical, and able to work both independently and collaboratively. Good communication skills and enthusiasm for translational and interdisciplinary research are essential.
Applications must be submitted via the Varbi recruitment system by 2026-04-09. Required documents include a personal letter, CV, degree projects, previous publications, and certificates of eligibility. Selection is based on subject knowledge, analytical skill, and relevant experience. For further information, contact Professor Mikael Ryden ([email protected]) or Senior Researcher Niklas Mejhert ([email protected]).
Join the Rydén and Mejhert Laboratory at Karolinska Institutet and contribute to cutting-edge research in adipocyte systems biology and cardiometabolic health.
