The Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute (HKI) in Jena, Germany, is offering a four-year Doctoral Researcher (PhD) position in Metagenomics within the Microbiome Dynamics (MBD) department. The institute is renowned for its research on the pathobiology of microorganisms and the development of natural product-based therapeutics for infectious diseases.

The successful candidate will join the MBD department, which leverages computational methods to develop personalized microbiome-based strategies for disease detection, monitoring, treatment, and prevention. The department coordinates and participates in several high-profile, EU- and nationally-funded consortia, including MiCCrobioTAckle, PerMiCCion, FOODGUARD, NUTRIMMUNE, the Cluster of Excellence “Balance of the Microverse,” and SynThera. Research in this group focuses on the computational integration of multi-omics datasets from both microbial communities and the host, aiming to uncover the systemic impact of gut bacteria on human physiology and disease.

The PhD project will be tailored to the candidate’s skills and interests, aligning with the objectives of the consortia. The work will involve investigating the interface of the gut microbiome, diet, and immune system, with applications to diseases such as cancer, metabolic disorders, aging, and infections. The position offers the opportunity to collaborate with leading scientists in an interdisciplinary, international environment, supported by state-of-the-art computational infrastructure and a collegial, inclusive atmosphere.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in computational biology, bioinformatics, systems biology, bioengineering, chemical engineering, or a related field. Experience in the analysis of metagenomics, metabolomics, or other high-throughput biological datasets, as well as statistical methods and programming (Python, Perl, C++, R), is required. Strong collaborative skills and a keen interest in interdisciplinary research are essential.

The position is fully funded, with salary according to the German TV-L scale for public service employees. The group consists of 15–20 members at various career stages.
