About this position

KTH Royal Institute of Technology invites applications for a doctoral student position in "Autonomous Decentralized Energy Market Design and Analytics" within the Division of Decision and Control Systems. This research opportunity addresses the transformation of the electrical power grid, driven by digitalization, deregulation, and the integration of renewable energy resources. The project focuses on the development of next-generation decentralized energy markets, enabling local energy communities and peer-to-peer trading platforms to enhance flexibility, autonomy, and fairness in electricity access.

The doctoral research will tackle key challenges such as the computational complexity of large-scale decentralized markets, uncertainty from renewable generation, and the need for operational feasibility and fairness among diverse participants. The work will blend optimization, game theory, control, and data-driven learning methods to create new mathematical models and algorithms. Research topics include stochastic and data-driven modeling of peer-to-peer energy trading, learning-to-optimize (L2O) for multi-agent systems, bilevel games and mechanism design for fair pricing, and the design and analysis of decentralized energy markets.

Supervision will be provided by Assistant Professor Giuseppe Belgioioso and Professor Henrik Sandberg. The successful candidate will join a dynamic research group at KTH, contributing to both fundamental and computational advances in energy market design. The position offers full-time employment for up to four years, with a monthly salary according to KTH’s doctoral student salary agreement and access to employee benefits.

Eligibility requires a second cycle degree (such as a master's) or equivalent, with at least 240 higher education credits (including 60 at the second cycle), and English proficiency equivalent to English B/6. Applicants should be highly motivated, goal-oriented, able to work independently and collaboratively, and capable of analyzing complex issues. At least one academic or professional reference is required, and personal skills are emphasized in the selection process.

To apply, submit your application through KTH's recruitment system, including certified copies of diplomas, grades, proof of language proficiency, CV, motivation letter, and references. The application deadline is January 15, 2026. For further information, contact Assistant Professor Giuseppe Belgioioso at [email protected].
