This fully funded PhD position at Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a doctoral student to investigate the structure and morphology of soft matter systems. The research is based in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, specifically within the Division of Applied Chemistry, which is renowned for its work on heterogeneous materials such as polymers, gels, and bio-based materials. The project aims to understand how structural organization across multiple length scales governs the properties of soft matter, using advanced solid-state NMR spectroscopy enhanced by dynamic nuclear polarization.

The doctoral student will develop and apply experimental approaches to resolve and quantify structural domains in heterogeneous soft materials, relating these findings to macroscopic material properties. The research combines methodological development with studies of real material systems, offering opportunities for both experimental and conceptual contributions. The division collaborates closely with the Swedish NMR Centre, providing access to state-of-the-art magnetic resonance instrumentation and a vibrant research environment.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in chemistry, physics, materials science, chemical engineering, or a closely related field. A strong interest in scientific research, especially in understanding physical or chemical phenomena in heterogeneous systems, is essential. The position is experimental in nature, requiring motivation to design experiments, operate advanced scientific instrumentation, and interpret results. Proficiency in written and spoken English is required. Experience in experimental research, spectroscopy, physical chemistry, or materials characterization is advantageous but not mandatory. Candidates with strong scientific curiosity and motivation are encouraged to apply even if they do not meet all listed qualifications.

The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which can extend the position to five years. The starting salary is 34,550 SEK per month (from May 25, 2025), and the position includes full employee benefits. Doctoral studies require physical presence in Sweden throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.
