Description

This fully funded PhD studentship at Swansea University is offered by the National Centre for Suicide Prevention and Self-Harm Research, in partnership with Public Health Wales and Health and Care Research Wales. The project focuses on suicide prevention using real-world data, including near real-time suicide surveillance and the SAIL Databank, to understand and mitigate suicide risk and self-harm across key populations. The research aims to inform national prevention strategies and improve support for at-risk groups, with a strong emphasis on policy translation and real-world impact.

As a PhD researcher, you will join a multidisciplinary team working across public health, epidemiology, data science, and policy. You will have the opportunity to work with rich, population-scale data sources, apply advanced analytical and epidemiological methods, and develop skills in research design, data analysis, and scientific writing. The project will be guided by emerging themes in suicide surveillance and will involve co-production with lived experience experts from the outset.

The studentship is open to UK fee-eligible applicants who hold at least a 2.1 undergraduate degree (or non-UK equivalent) and meet English language requirements (IELTS 6.5 overall, no component below 6.5, or equivalent). The scholarship covers full tuition fees and provides a stipend at the UKRI rate (£20,780 per year). The start date is projected for 1 January 2026, with the possibility of a short deferral if necessary.

Applicants must submit a complete application including a CV, degree certificates and transcripts, a cover letter with a supplementary personal statement, one reference from an academic or employer (using a professional email), evidence of English language proficiency (if applicable), a copy of UK resident visa (if applicable), and confirmation of EDI form submission. The application must include the RS Code RS905 and scholarship title in the relevant sections. Only applications with all required information will be considered.

The deadline for applications is 25 November 2025. Informal enquiries can be directed to Dr Amanda Marchant (A.L.Marchant@swansea.ac.uk) or Bethanie David (B.H.Denyer@Swansea.ac.uk). For more information and to apply, visit the Swansea University scholarship page.
