Fully-funded PhD Position in Evolutionary Biology – Social Plasticity and Adaptation University of Bern in Switzerland

The University of Bern, in collaboration with Eawag and supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation, is offering a fully-funded PhD position in Evolutionary Biology. The research focuses on understanding how social plasticity shapes adaptation to novel environments, specifically investigating the coevolution of social behavior and morphology in three-spined stickleback fish populations following their recent colonization of a large freshwater lake system in southern Greenland.

The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Jordan Martin and Dr. Katie Peichel (University of Bern) and Dr. Blake Matthews (Eawag), engaging in both fieldwork (Greenland) and laboratory experiments (Switzerland). The project involves intensive data collection on morphology, behavior, and DNA, as well as routine animal care and leading a common garden experiment. Students will benefit from hands-on mentorship, a supportive lab group, and opportunities to engage with international research communities.

Applicants should have a strong background in behavioral ecology and a Master’s degree in biology (evolution, ecology). Experience with standardized behavioral experiments in field or lab settings is required. The ideal candidate is independent, adventurous, conscientious, and cooperative. Additional desirable skills include familiarity with R and Bayesian statistics, automated coding techniques, evolutionary genetics, morphometrics, social evolution, prior work with fish or aquatic habitats, and a passion for animals and the outdoors.

The position is fully funded for four years, with all research expenses covered.
