The UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training in Sustainable Understandable agri-food Systems Transformed by Artificial INtelligence (SUSTAIN CDT) is offering fully funded 4-year PhD studentships for October 2026 entry. These positions are hosted by a consortium of leading UK universities, including the University of Lincoln, University of Aberdeen, Queen's University Belfast, and University of Strathclyde. The program focuses on the application of artificial intelligence, deep learning, and computer vision to address challenges in sustainable agri-food systems, such as biodiversity monitoring, supply chain efficiency, CO2 emissions, livestock management, and more.

Applicants can choose from a range of interdisciplinary projects, many of which are open to both home and international students. Supervisors include experts from academia and industry, ensuring a rich, multidisciplinary research environment. The studentship package covers full tuition fees, a generous tax-free stipend (up to £31,805 for home students and £21,805 for international students), and a £12,000 research support training grant. Projects span topics such as AI-enabled monitoring of biodiversity, quantitative supply chain verification, AI for planetary health, satellite imagery analysis, federated learning for nutrient management, and vision-based modeling of livestock behavior.

Eligibility requirements include a strong academic background (first or upper second class honours degree or equivalent) in a relevant field such as computer science, engineering, mathematics, environmental science, or agriculture. Experience or interest in AI, machine learning, or data science is highly desirable. English language proficiency is required.
