Imperial College London’s Grantham Institute – Climate Change and the Environment is inviting applications for fully funded PhD studentships. Up to two PhD positions are available, focusing on the interface of Plant Biology and Bioelectronics, with the goal of developing next-generation technologies for plant research and agriculture. The research areas include the discovery of new ecofriendly chemistries, diagnostic technologies for plant health, and innovative approaches to crop protection and environmental sustainability.

These positions are sponsored by the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change & the Environment, a leading hub for interdisciplinary research at Imperial College London. The Institute supports projects in priority research areas such as plant phenotyping, biomarker sensing, biological crop protection, ocean mixing, environmental monitoring, and AI-guided crop immunity. Supervisors include renowned academics such as Professor Firat Guder, Dr Sonja Billerbeck, Dr Adrien Lefauve, Dr Alex Whittaker, Dr Tiago Dias da Costa, Dr Giorgio Gilestro, Professor Tolga Bozkurt, Dr Jingwen Weng, Dr Xiangkun (Elvis) Cao, Professor Ralf Toumi, and Dr Judite Goncalves.

The studentship provides 3.5 years of funding, covering home tuition fees at the UKRI indicative rate (£5,006 per annum for 2025/26), a maintenance stipend of £22,780 per annum, and up to £5,000 for research expenses. Both home and international candidates are encouraged to apply, though international applicants may need to cover additional tuition costs unless exceptionally supported by the department. Applicants should have a strong academic background in biology, chemistry, environmental science, agriculture, or related fields, and demonstrate a keen interest in plant biology, bioelectronics, or climate change research. English language proficiency is required as per Imperial College London’s standards.
