This fully funded PhD project at the University of Bristol, offered through the SWBio DTP, focuses on investigating the effects of diabetes and obesity medications—specifically GLP-1R agonists like semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy)—on the brain-kidney axis. The research addresses the growing public health challenge posed by obesity and diabetes, which now affect both adults and children. GLP-1R agonists are effective therapies but can cause side effects such as dehydration and acute kidney injury, likely due to their impact on fluid homeostasis. The project will explore how these drugs alter vasopressin secretion and downstream molecular signaling pathways in the kidney, using existing brain and kidney proteomic datasets from semaglutide-treated rats. Students will gain expertise in proteomics, molecular biology, and bioinformatics, analyzing candidate protein targets and investigating their relevance to complex traits and health outcomes. The research will involve in vivo studies, in vitro cell culture systems, and advanced molecular techniques. The SWBio DTP provides a supportive and inclusive environment, accommodating flexible working and part-time study requests to enable access for students from diverse backgrounds. The programme is internationally recognized for its interdisciplinary bioscience training and research excellence. Funding includes a four-year studentship with a stipend of £20,780 (2025/26), full tuition fees, research costs, and additional support for fieldwork, conferences, and placements. Up to 30% of studentships are available for international applicants. Applicants should have a strong academic background in biological or biomedical sciences and an interest in molecular biology, endocrinology, or bioinformatics. Requirements
