Open PhD Position: Manufacturing of In-Vitro mRNA-Loaded Viral Vectors and Virus-Like Particles

We are seeking a motivated PhD candidate for an exciting research project in Manufacturing of In-Vitro mRNA-Loaded Viral Vectors and Virus-Like Particles . This project is hosted by the Biomanufacturing Research Group at the University of Adelaide under the supervision of Dr. Lukas Gerstweiler .

Project Overview:

Viral vectors, particularly Adeno-Associated Viruses (AAVs) , are a promising tool in gene therapies for treating diseases like hemophilia. However, the current manufacturing processes face significant challenges, such as low production yields and partially filled particles, making these therapies extremely expensive—often over $1 million per dose .

This PhD project focuses on developing next-generation virus-like particles (VLPs) that can be loaded with mRNA in vitro , eliminating the need for complex and costly cell line development and upstream processing. By innovating in these areas, this research could make life-changing therapies more affordable and accessible.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and optimize processes for the manufacturing of in-vitro mRNA-loaded viral vectors and VLPs.
  • Address challenges in particle integrity, loading efficiency, and large-scale production.
  • Conduct experiments and analyze data to improve the overall manufacturing process.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, contributing to both experimental work and theoretical advancements.
  • Share findings through scientific publications and conference presentations.

Candidate Profile:

  • Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Industrial Biotechnology, Biotech, Bioprocess Engineering , or a related field.
  • Experience : Research or work experience in viral vector production, bioprocessing, or a similar area is highly valued. Publications are a plus.
  • Skills : Strong background in biomanufacturing, with a focus on upstream/downstream processes and mRNA technology.
  • Motivation : A passion for cutting-edge gene therapy solutions and a drive to address the complex challenges in the field.

Funding and Scholarships:

Outstanding candidates may be eligible for the University of Adelaide’s scholarships , offering $32,500 AUD per annum , indexed annually.
