Description

Dr. Erin Meyer-Gutbrod's Conservation Oceanography lab at the University of South Carolina is seeking a new graduate student (MS or PhD) for a funded research project in Marine Science focused on Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) of North Atlantic right whales. The project involves collecting and analyzing hydrophone data from various deployments, including archival sea floor hydrophones, stationary buoy hydrophones, and a Slocum glider. Research will be conducted in the region between Norfolk, Virginia and Cape Canaveral, Florida, with a particular emphasis on whale detections near the calving grounds. The study aims to address environmental, biological, and anthropogenic noise sources, as well as variations in acoustic propagation by deployment type, location, and season. Students will have the opportunity to design side projects based on their interests. Applicants should have a background in marine science, biology, acoustics, programming, engineering, or related fields, and a strong interest in acoustic data analysis. The position is funded, but specific financial details are not provided. To apply, candidates should email Dr. Erin Meyer-Gutbrod with a CV and statement of interest by November 15, 2025. The lab is part of the School of the Earth, Ocean & Environment at the University of South Carolina.

Funding
