About this position

Enabling integrated and free space photonics with advanced reprogrammable materials. The current increase in data generation is expected to reach unsustainable rates by the end of the decade. This has a strong impact on the environment and therefore new solutions are sought after. In addition, specific applications such as image recognition and lidar are more efficiently processed in the light domain. Integrated photonics have the inherent ability to support a much larger data density than electronic solutions. Advanced reprogrammable photonic materials enable neuromorphic based computation a key component to efficient artificial intelligence. Our work is to build the most efficient components by developing the next generation of advanced materials to achieve sustainability in AI applications. We work to create a reprogrammable photonic platform for a variety of applications from telecommunications to neuromorphic biosensing. If you enjoy developing new technologies and applying novel concepts, you will enjoy working with us. Our facilities are unique in the UK and will be available to develop your skills in the design, characterisation, optimization, and experimental application of novel materials and devices. You will have the opportunity to optimise the processes and materials and thus be the first in the world to use them.We are looking for a passionate candidate excited about the latest developments in technology. You will work in a multidisciplinary, motivating, and supportive environment. You will need a background in physics, chemistry, engineering, electronics, or a related discipline. A basic understanding of semiconductor physics, photonics and material science are essential, and we will support you to expand in all these subjects. Experience with experimental work in either electronics, physics, optics or photonics, and computer modelling, programming languages are also desirable. The University of Southampton is committed into sustaining an inclusive environment for all students and staff. The University holds an Athena SWAN Silver Award and works continuously to improve equality in the workplace and encourage a work-life balance. Our focus is on the development and progression of our students and researchers, and we achieve this through a friendly supportive environment.Entry RequirementsA very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).Closing date: Applications will be considered in the order that they are received, the position will be considered filled when a suitable candidate has been identified.Funding: We offer a range of funding opportunities for both UK and international students, including Bursaries and Scholarships. For more information please visit PhD Scholarships | Doctoral College | University of Southampton Funding will be awarded on a rolling basis, so apply early for the best opportunity to be considered. How To ApplyApply online: HERE Select programme type (Research), 2024/25, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, next page select “PhD Computer Science (Full time)”.
