About this position

This PhD project at the University of Southampton focuses on the critical challenge of estimating the peak tyre-road friction coefficient for electric vehicles (EVs), particularly in the context of autonomous driving. Accurate estimation of this coefficient is essential for the development of advanced active safety systems, which are increasingly important as vehicles become more autonomous and as society transitions towards electric mobility to address climate change.

The research addresses a fundamental safety problem: determining the maximum forces at the tyre-road contact points, which are vital for vehicle control and accident avoidance. While existing methods for friction estimation are effective under moderate or heavy steering, braking, or throttle, they are less reliable when the vehicle is operating at low acceleration—precisely when early intervention is most valuable for autonomous vehicles. This project aims to develop new methods for friction estimation under these challenging conditions, with the potential to significantly enhance the safety and reliability of future autonomous EVs.

As a PhD student, you will join the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and work under the supervision of Dr Anil Madhusudhanan. The research will draw on expertise in automotive engineering, control systems, dynamics, electrical and mechanical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, and systems engineering. The University of Southampton provides a supportive and inclusive environment, with a strong commitment to equality, diversity, and sustainability, as evidenced by its Athena SWAN award and Platinum EcoAward.

Funding is available through several competitive schemes, including Lanchester Category D Excellence Studentships, Presidential Scholarships, and Black Futures Scholarships, which cover tuition fees and provide a tax-free stipend for up to 3.5 years for top UK applicants. Additional fee waivers and bursaries are available for EU, Horizon Europe, and top-ranked international applicants. Applicants must hold a UK 1st class honours degree or its international equivalent. Applications should include a CV, two academic references, degree transcripts and certificates, and proof of English language proficiency if required.

The application deadline is May 29, 2026. For more information or to discuss the project, prospective applicants are encouraged to contact Dr Anil Madhusudhanan at [email protected]. To apply, select the PhD Engineering & the Environment (7175) programme, indicate your preferred study mode, and include the supervisor's name in your application.
