The PhD and MD/PhD in Translational Biomedicine at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is a cutting-edge doctoral programme designed to bridge the gap between basic biomedical research and clinical application. Established in 2013, TransMed is a collaborative initiative involving four faculties: the University Medical Centre, Biology, Chemistry/Pharmaceutical Sciences/Geosciences, and Social Sciences/Media/Sports. The programme is based in Mainz, Germany, and all courses and thesis work are conducted in English, making it highly accessible to international students.

TransMed serves as the graduate school for the Research Centre "Translational Medicine," focusing on three main research areas: Immunotherapy, Translational Neurosciences, and Translational Vascular Biology. The curriculum is flexible and tailored for both clinician scientists and medical scientists, offering a broad supervision and mentoring network throughout the doctoral journey. Students benefit from international guest lecturers, intercultural training, and collaborative projects with partners in Germany and abroad.

Funding is available through the TransMed scholarship programme, which awards approximately 2,000 EUR per month to excellent international doctoral students. There are no tuition fees, and the semester contribution includes a public transport ticket for the local area. Accommodation options are available in student residence halls or on the private market, with living costs estimated at around 900 EUR per month.

Applicants must have a Master's degree or equivalent in natural sciences, or a German state examination for medical graduates. English proficiency is required (TOEFL iBT minimum 60 or IELTS B1), and MD/PhD candidates working as physicians must also demonstrate good German language skills. Applications for the Dr rer nat track are accepted year-round, while deadlines for the PhD and MD/PhD tracks should be checked on the programme website.
