Description

The MathPower group at the University of Calgary, led by Dr. Zhirui Liang, is recruiting multiple fully funded PhD students and postdoctoral researchers to start in Fall 2026. The group focuses on rigorous mathematical models, data-driven methods, and trustworthy AI algorithms to support the integration of renewable energy and manage surge electricity demand, with research at the intersection of optimization, game theory, machine learning, power system engineering, and energy economics. PhD students may join through the Mathematics and Statistics or Geoscience programs, and postdocs are encouraged to apply via the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) fellowship. Research topics include power/energy system modeling under uncertainty, AI-integrated power system operation, distributed energy resources, and energy-efficient computing. Applicants should have a relevant master's degree and strong skills in mathematical modeling, optimization, or machine learning, as well as programming experience. The positions are fully funded, covering tuition and stipend. To apply, candidates should email Dr. Liang with their CV, transcript, and a brief statement of research experience and interests. The University of Calgary is a top Canadian institution located in a vibrant city with access to world-class research opportunities and natural beauty.
