About this position

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD position in AI-Enhanced Planning in Shipbuilding Supply Chains, based in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. This opportunity is embedded within the Norwegian Maritime AI Centre, a national hub for applied artificial intelligence in the maritime sector, and offers a unique chance to contribute to the digitization and optimization of shipbuilding operations.

The maritime industry is rapidly adopting AI technologies, and the next decade will see extensive digitization of operational data in shipyards. The PhD research will focus on leveraging AI techniques to support decision-makers in analyzing real-time and historical data, coordinating operators, equipment, and facilities, and managing operations across multiple projects and supply chain partners. Key research areas include integrating AI into planning methods and systems, anticipating disruptions, analyzing trade-offs in tactical sourcing decisions, and improving supply chain performance.

As a member of the Production Management Research Group at NTNU, you will work alongside industry and public partners in the Norwegian Maritime AI Centre. The research environment is world-leading, with a strong focus on the design and planning of production and logistics systems. The Norwegian Maritime AI Centre is funded by the Research Council of Norway and its partners for 2026-2030, and includes a network of research and user partners from academia and the maritime sector.

The position offers a gross salary of NOK 550,800 per annum, with a 3-year employment period and a 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund. Additional benefits include access to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, free Norwegian language training at a basic level, and a mentor programme for new employees. The working environment is open, inclusive, and committed to diversity, with career guidance and follow-up throughout the PhD period.

Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree (Industrial Engineering, Logistics Engineering, Production Management, Supply Chain Management, Mechanical Engineering, Project Management or equivalent), corresponding to a five-year Norwegian course with 120 credits at master's level. A strong academic background is required, with an average grade of B or better according to NTNU's grading scale. Excellent written and oral English language skills are mandatory. Preferred qualifications include experience with machine learning or AI technologies, Scandinavian language skills, and previous industry or research experience in engineer-to-order manufacturing. Personal qualities such as independence, teamwork, communication skills, motivation, and openness to feedback are highly valued.

To apply, submit your application electronically via Jobbnorge.no by the deadline (21 June 2026). Required documents include transcripts and diplomas for Bachelor's and Master's degrees, CV, copy or draft of Master's thesis, a research plan (5-7 pages), publications or other relevant research work, certificates, and names/contact information of three referees. If your education was completed abroad, attach documentation of scope and quality. Applications will only be assessed based on information received by the deadline.

For further information, contact Professor Erlend Alfnes ([email protected]) regarding the position, or HR Senior Consultant Hedda Winnberg ([email protected]) for recruitment process queries. The position is based in Trondheim, a modern European city known for its rich cultural scene, tech industry, and high quality of life.

Join NTNU and the Norwegian Maritime AI Centre to advance research in AI-driven supply chain planning and logistics, and help shape the future of the maritime industry.
