The Faculty of Law at UiT The Arctic University of Norway invites applications for a PhD Fellow in Law, affiliated with the Norwegian Centre for the Law of the Sea (NCLOS). This four-year position offers a unique opportunity to conduct doctoral research in a vibrant academic environment, with the final year dedicated to teaching and faculty duties. The research focus is broad, encompassing all facets of the law of the sea, including intersecting fields such as international environmental law, law of armed conflict, international economic law, human rights, and especially themes relevant to the maritime and Arctic domains.

NCLOS research covers theoretical, methodological, and regional (notably Arctic) themes. Candidates are expected to develop projects within broad themes such as Ocean Commons, Arctic Marine Governance, and Regime Interaction. Preferred topics include legal issues related to climate interventions (especially in the Arctic), regulation of common spaces and interests, critical maritime infrastructures (doctrinal and theoretical exploration), intersections between law of the sea and outer space law, Arctic fisheries, and the ocean-climate nexus. Both doctrinal and critical approaches are welcome, and applicants are encouraged to review NCLOS’s research portfolio for alignment.

The Faculty of Law is home to approximately 1000 law students, 25 PhD fellows, and a diverse academic staff. It hosts several research groups, including Administrative Law, Criminal Law, Crime Control and Security Law, Property Law, Children's Rights, Sámi and Indigenous Peoples' Law, and Human Rights and International Law. The faculty awards Master and PhD degrees in Law, as well as LL.M. in the Law of the Sea and a Joint Nordic Master’s Programme in Environmental Law.

Applicants must hold a five-year Master’s degree in Law or Cand. jur. with good grades, or equivalent legal education from a foreign university. While knowledge of the Norwegian legal system and proficiency in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is preferable, it is not mandatory. Candidates must submit a comprehensive project description (5-8 pages), cover letter, CV, diplomas, transcripts, proof of language proficiency, references, and academic works. All documentation must be in a Scandinavian language or English. If English proficiency is not documented in the application, it must be provided before starting the position. Applicants who already hold a PhD or equivalent competence are not eligible.

The position offers remuneration according to the State salary scale code 1017, with a compulsory 2% contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, membership in the fund, health care services, and a state collective pay agreement. Fieldwork expenses are covered only within the allotted annuum. The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø, and candidates must be able to start within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.
