About this position

Ghent University’s Department of Applied Physics invites applications for a fully funded PhD fellowship in the Research Unit Plasma Technology (RUPT). This position focuses on the plasma-assisted development of advanced tissue engineering scaffolds, exploring how cold plasmas can be used to tailor surface chemistry, morphology, and introduce bioactive functionalities to create innovative scaffolds that support cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation.

The successful candidate will work at the interface of plasma science, materials engineering, and regenerative medicine, modifying polymeric and composite biomaterials using plasma reactors, developing plasma-based coatings, and controlling surface properties to guide cellular responses. The research involves operating and optimizing non-thermal plasma systems, producing scaffolds via 3D printing and/or electrospinning, and performing advanced surface characterization (XPS, FTIR, SEM, AFM). Biological evaluation will be conducted in collaboration with biomedical partners at UGent and Hasselt University (BIOMED Institute).

Key responsibilities include data analysis, scientific publication, conference presentations, and contributing to group activities and student supervision. The project offers access to state-of-the-art plasma systems, surface characterization tools, and in vitro cell culture facilities, as well as opportunities for international collaboration and research stays.

Applicants must hold or be in the final year of a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry, (Applied) Physics, Engineering, or Materials Engineering, with excellent academic results. A strong interest in tissue engineering, biomaterials, surface modification, polymer chemistry, plasma physics and/or plasma chemistry is essential. Candidates should have strong English communication skills and the ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams. Experience with cell culture and/or surface characterization is an asset but not required.

The fellowship is a full-time position for up to 48 months, with salary at 100% of the net salary of an AAP member, tax-free, and includes benefits such as training opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers. The contract will start no later than October 1st, 2026.
