About this position

The University of Luxembourg, a leading international research university, is offering a PhD position in AI-Assisted Probability and Mathematical Discovery within its Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM). The FSTM is renowned for its multidisciplinary expertise spanning Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Life Sciences, and Medicine, and is committed to advancing society through teaching and research.

This doctoral opportunity is embedded in the research group led by Professor Ivan Nourdin and focuses on an ambitious project at the intersection of probability theory and artificial intelligence. The project aims to rethink and structure the process of mathematical research in the era of AI, with the goal of developing a methodological framework for AI-assisted mathematical discovery. Key responsibilities include designing and implementing a structured system for AI-assisted mathematical research, integrating formal tools such as proof assistants into the scientific workflow, and developing reproducible protocols for mathematical creation, verification, and publication, including formal certification of results. The successful candidate will also contribute to departmental scientific activities such as seminars, workshops, reading groups, and schools.

Applicants should possess an excellent level in mathematics, a strong passion for probability theory, and a genuine curiosity for the new possibilities opened by AI. A strong background in probability theory is mandatory, along with high intellectual rigor, scientific maturity, and the ability to conduct autonomous research. A strong interest in artificial intelligence and its application to mathematical research is required, and fluency in either English or French is necessary. The University values a pioneer mindset and deep conceptual work.

The University of Luxembourg offers a modern and dynamic environment with high-quality equipment, a unique urban campus, and close ties to the business world and Luxembourg labour market. Staff come from over 90 countries, and the institution is a member of the University of the Greater Region (UniGR). The university promotes an inclusive culture and encourages applications from individuals of all backgrounds.

The position is a fixed-term contract for 36 months, full-time (40 hours per week), based at the Belval Campus. The yearly gross salary for every PhD at the University of Luxembourg is EUR 41976 (full time).

Applications should be submitted online through the University of Luxembourg HR system, including a Curriculum Vitae and cover letter. Early application is highly encouraged, as applications will be processed upon reception. Applications by email will not be considered. All qualified individuals are encouraged to apply.
