The SICSS Graduate School at the University of Hamburg offers a structured PhD programme in Climate and Earth System Sciences, designed for highly motivated doctoral candidates interested in advancing their expertise in climate system interactions and climate effects. The programme is conducted in cooperation with leading research institutions, including the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability (CEN), Hamburg Earth and Society Research HUB (ESRAH), the Cluster of Excellence 'Climate, Climatic Change, and Society' (CLICCS), the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-ESM), Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, and the German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ).

All courses are held in English, and the programme spans six semesters, beginning in either the winter or summer semester. The curriculum emphasizes basic research, interdisciplinary thinking, and international networking, guiding doctoral candidates to become highly qualified researchers in their field. Compulsory introduction courses on climate system sciences are complemented by expert courses, summer schools, and scientific skills training, including project management, scientific programming, statistics, and proposal writing. The programme also offers retreats, lecture series, and soft skills courses to enhance communication and presentation abilities.

International elements are integral to the programme, with training in intercultural skills, international guest lecturers, and collaborative projects with partners in Germany and abroad. While there are no tuition fees, students must pay an administration fee of approximately 340 EUR per semester, which includes a public transport ticket for the Hamburg metropolitan area. Living costs are estimated at 400–700 EUR per month for housing and 500–700 EUR per month for other expenses.

Applicants must hold a Master's degree or German 'Diplom' in natural sciences, environmental earth sciences, climate sciences, or related fields such as social sciences, economics, or humanities. The doctoral thesis must focus on climate and earth system sciences. Good English language skills are required, and German language skills are helpful. Importantly, applicants should already have a scholarship or employment at Universität Hamburg or a cooperating institution, as the university does not provide funding opportunities for this programme.
