About this position

This PhD opportunity at La Trobe University focuses on insect pest control using RNA interference (RNAi) and microbial biocontrol agents. The project aims to develop integrated strategies that combine entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) with RNAi-based approaches for improved management of horticultural pests. The research will analyze interactions between highly virulent EPF strains and priority pest species using transcriptomics and proteomics, identify and evaluate novel dsRNA targets, and model bio-insecticidal agents to assess potential synergy.

Successful candidates will receive a $37,000 AUD per annum (tax free, 2026 rate) scholarship for up to three and a half years, training at AgriBio (Australia’s first integrated agricultural systems biology research center), professional development programs, and international travel opportunities. The project is based at AgriBio, Centre for AgriBiosciences, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, and features collaboration with the University of Melbourne.

Applicants must meet La Trobe University entry requirements for a Doctor of Philosophy degree. Required documents include a covering letter, curriculum vitae (with evidence of research writing), and academic transcripts. The project will be supervised by Prof Brendan Rodoni, Dr Aimee McKinnon, and Dr Jack Scanlan within the La Trobe School of Applied Systems Biology. Application details and eligibility criteria are available at the provided La Trobe University link. Applications are open until filled.

Key research areas include insect pest control, RNA interference, microbial biocontrol, entomopathogenic fungi, dsRNA, agricultural microbiomes, proteomics, and horticultural pest management. This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in bioscience research, sustainable agriculture, and integrated pest management strategies.
