Description

The University of Salford is offering a PhD opportunity focused on vocal communication in ring-necked parakeets (Psittacula krameri), based within the Environmental Research & Innovation Centre (ERIC). This project is ideal for candidates interested in ornithology, animal behaviour, and bioacoustics, and will involve research into the vocal communication systems of these birds. The successful applicant will join a vibrant research environment and benefit from the university’s resources and training provision. The PhD is supervised by Amy Leedale, Lecturer in Zoology at the University of Salford. Eligible candidates are encouraged to apply for the University of Salford Widening Participation Scholarships, which support UK students from underrepresented backgrounds. These scholarships cover UK tuition fees, provide a stipend of £21,611 per year for 3.5 years, and include an annual research budget of £1,000 for the first three years. Ten scholarships are available for UK candidates, with priority given to University of Salford graduates and those meeting widening participation criteria (such as specific postcodes, ethnic minorities, disability, first-generation status, mature students, or care-experienced/estranged students). Applicants should have a strong academic background in biology, zoology, animal behaviour, or a related field, and demonstrate a keen interest in ornithology or bioacoustics. The application process involves submitting a research degree application by 30 January 2026, after which eligible candidates will be invited to complete a scholarship application by 27 February 2026. Shortlisted candidates will participate in a selection process in April/May 2026. For more information, candidates are encouraged to contact Amy Leedale directly at a.e.leedale@salford.ac.uk. For further details, visit the University of Salford Doctoral School website and review the full scholarship and studentship information. This is an excellent opportunity for aspiring researchers passionate about avian communication and behavioural ecology to join a leading UK research institution.
