About this position

The Machine Learning in Photonic Systems group at DTU Electro, Technical University of Denmark, invites applications for a fully funded PhD position focused on photonic reservoir computing in coupled resonant structures. This research aims to advance multiplexing in photonic integrated circuits, enhancing computing efficiency through parallelism and exploring the potential of neuromorphic computing inspired by the brain’s energy-efficient processing capabilities.

This PhD project is part of the international MINDnet Doctoral Network, which includes 15 PhD students across 7 universities, a research center, and two companies from eight EU countries. The network’s overarching theme is neuromorphic computing and analog signal processing, with applications in communication, sensing, geolocalization, space, and biomedical fields. The successful candidate will be based at DTU Electro and will participate in secondments of at least 3 months at Technical University of Illmenau (Germany), HPE (Belgium), and University of Trento (Italy). Regular collaboration with other doctoral candidates in the network is expected, including participation in training schools and workshops.

The research will focus on the nonlinear dynamics and computing metrics in micro-ring resonators and coupled ring-resonator architectures, evaluating the number and spatial distribution of coupled cavities for photonic reservoir computing, and validating analyses on small-scale circuits (less than 10 coupled cavities). The project offers a unique opportunity to work in a team with strong numerical and experimental expertise in photonic computing, benefiting from synergies with other projects and activities at DTU Electro.

DTU Electro is a leading department with over 300 employees specializing in electrical and photonics engineering, conducting research in nanophotonics, lasers, quantum photonics, optical sensors, LEDs, photovoltaics, ultra-high speed optical transmission systems, bio-photonics, acoustics, power electronics, robotics, and autonomous systems. The position is funded for three years, with a salary based on the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations’ collective agreement. The minimum wage is DKK 29,691.75 per month plus a PhD supplement of DKK 1,551.00, with pension contributions paid by DTU. The appointment is full-time (37 hours per week).

Due to Marie Skłodowska-Curie mobility rules, candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 36 months prior to recruitment.
