This PhD position at Eindhoven University of Technology focuses on the long-term monitoring of sleep disorder symptoms, specifically narcolepsy, using digital tools and mHealth applications. The project is a collaboration between TU/e, Sleep Center Kempenhaeghe, and Takeda, aiming to improve low-obtrusive, scalable monitoring and management of narcolepsy symptoms. Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder with a wide range of symptoms, including excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, hallucinations, sleep paralysis, and fragmented sleep, as well as cognitive and mood disturbances. Current questionnaires do not adequately capture the full spectrum or variability of symptoms, creating a need for advanced monitoring tools. The research will utilize the Narcolepsy Monitor, a digital tool developed by Kempenhaeghe, to analyze symptom clusters and quantify disease burden dynamics over time. The project will also integrate wearable sensor data with self-reported data to enhance monitoring accuracy and reduce user burden. Another key aspect is understanding the preferences of patients and healthcare professionals in monitoring and co-creating dashboards tailored to their needs. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team with expertise in sleep medicine, longitudinal monitoring, and digital health technology, working within the Advanced Sleep Monitoring research group (Biomedical Diagnostics lab, Electrical Engineering) and the Human Technology Interaction group (Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences).
