Description

This fully funded PhD opportunity at Victoria University of Wellington focuses on advancing the security of software supply chains, a critical area in today's digital landscape. The project, supported by the New Zealand Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) Endeavour Fund, addresses three main research themes: detecting vulnerabilities in software dependencies and AI datasets, developing tools to enhance practices such as SBOMs (Software Bill of Materials), SLSA (Supply-chain Levels for Software Artifacts), and reproducible builds, and strengthening the security and compliance of software supply chains used across New Zealand organisations. As a PhD candidate, you will join a dynamic research team in the School of Engineering and Computer Science, working under the supervision of Professor S MacDonell. The project offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in software engineering, cyber security, artificial intelligence, and human-computer interaction. You will have access to resources and support for conducting empirical software engineering research using both qualitative and quantitative methods, including large-scale surveys, interviews, lab and field studies, and case studies. Applicants should have a strong background in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related discipline, with demonstrated knowledge or experience in software security. Strong communication and writing skills are essential. Experience with research methods such as surveys, interviews, participant observation, and empirical studies is highly valued. Candidates must meet the formal entry requirements for PhD study at Victoria University of Wellington, be eligible for a New Zealand student visa, and be able to reside in Wellington for the duration of the project. The position is fully funded, covering tuition and a stipend, and is part of a major research initiative with significant impact on the security and compliance of software systems in New Zealand.
