About this position

CSL, a global plasma biotechnology company headquartered in Melbourne, is offering an exciting internship opportunity for motivated PhD or Master's by Research students in Statistics, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, or related fields. The internship focuses on enhancing the biomarker discovery pipeline for non-interventional studies, leveraging high-throughput datasets such as protein expression data. Interns will gain hands-on experience in research biostatistics within the biopharmaceutical industry, working alongside CSL's biostatistics team to address real-world research problems related to drug development.

The core project involves developing a robust, well-documented R-based pipeline for biomarker discovery, supporting a variety of outcome types including binary, time-to-event, continuous, and count data, and accommodating both longitudinal predictors and outcomes. The project will begin with a literature review to summarize best practices in statistical methods for high-dimensional and longitudinal data analysis, identify gaps, and evaluate available analytical tools. Insights from this review will guide the design and implementation of an integrated workflow for data preprocessing, feature selection, model development, validation, and interpretation. The pipeline will be applied to CSL case studies and/or publicly available datasets to demonstrate its practical utility and highlight opportunities for future enhancement.

Applicants should have a strong background in statistical principles, particularly for longitudinal data analysis, and extensive experience in R programming. High-level verbal and written communication skills are also required. The internship is open to both domestic and international PhD students, and women, indigenous, and disadvantaged candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. The position is based in Melbourne, VIC, and lasts for 6 months, with a stipend of $3,300 per month provided as scholarship payments.

Applications are open via APR.Intern, and early submissions are encouraged as the position may be filled before the closing date of 2026-02-04. For more information and to apply, visit the APR.Intern website. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to impactful research in biostatistics and bioinformatics, gain industry experience, and expand your professional network.
