Description

The Urban Ecosystem Science Team at Technische Universität Berlin is seeking a fully funded Early Career Scientist (PhD student or Postdoc) for a three-year research position focused on developing a Carbon Cycle Assessment Tool for urban infrastructure. This opportunity is part of the ForestOvershoot joint project, which aims to quantify the potential and timing of negative emissions through forest management and innovative uses of wood in the German construction sector, considering climate targets and forest disturbance risks. The successful candidate will participate in the sub-project to estimate the carbon storage potential of conventional and innovative wood products and assess associated carbon emissions in the German construction sector under various scenarios. Responsibilities include designing, developing, and implementing a workflow for a Carbon Cycle Assessment Tool, integrating it into an existing numerical model, and developing scenarios for carbon storage and emissions in urban infrastructures. The role also involves integrated analysis of carbon emissions and storage in urban and forest systems, as well as contributions to scientific publications, conferences, and project reports. Applicants should hold a Master, Diplom, or equivalent degree in Geoinformatics, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Environmental Sciences, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline. Required skills include knowledge of numerical modelling and data analysis, experience in programming (Python, R, MATLAB, or similar), and proficiency in German and/or English, with willingness to acquire missing language skills. Interest in urban ecological issues and sustainable construction, as well as an independent and well-structured working style and teamwork ability, are desirable. The position is fully funded (salary grade E13 TV-L Berliner Hochschulen) for three years, with full-time or part-time employment possible. The role offers opportunities for further academic qualification, such as pursuing a PhD. The Urban Ecosystem Science Team includes supervisors such as Prof. Dr. Galina Churkina, Thomas Nehls, Christopher Ryan, Sebastian Schubert, Mohamed Hefny Salim, and Melina Höfling. The application deadline is December 26, 2025, and the earliest start date is January 1, 2026. To apply, send your application (reference number VI-510/25) with the usual documents (single PDF, max. 5 MB) by email to Prof. Dr. Galina Churkina via [email protected]. TU Berlin values diversity and encourages applications from women, individuals with disabilities, and people of all nationalities and backgrounds.

Funding

The position is fully funded (100%) for three years, with a salary grade E13 TV-L Berliner Hochschulen. Full-time employment is offered, with the possibility of part-time arrangements. The position includes opportunities for further academic qualification (e.g., PhD).
