About this position

This PhD project at The University of Manchester focuses on the electrochemical machining (ECM) of materials that are traditionally difficult to cut, with a particular emphasis on achieving high-quality surface finishes across different length scales. ECM is increasingly important for manufacturing complex geometries and functional surfaces, especially where conventional methods like electro-discharge machining or laser processing may leave burrs or heat-affected zones. The research aims to address challenges such as material constitution, oxide layer formation, and precise electrode fabrication for desired geometries.

The project will investigate material removal processes at both macro and microscale levels, seeking to optimize surface quality and electrode geometry. A key component involves modelling the ECM process and validating results through the construction of an in-house demonstrator machine. This setup will enable systematic studies of various materials, electrolytes, and electrode configurations under controlled conditions. Special attention will be given to rapid electrode development techniques tailored to specific geometries.

Surface integrity and accuracy will be characterized using advanced methods including scanning electron microscopy, light interferometry, optical microscopy, and X-ray-based techniques. The outcome will be a novel methodology for process development, enabling the production of high-quality surfaces at multiple scales via ECM.

Applicants should hold or expect to achieve at least a 2.1 honours degree or a master’s (or international equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering discipline, such as mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, or materials science. Strong academic performance and relevant experience are preferred. English language certification is required for non-native speakers.

Funding is available for excellent candidates through competence-based faculty funding, covering tuition fees and a tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (£20,780 for 2025/26), with annual increases expected. Self-funded students are also welcome to apply. The start date is October 2026, and flexible study arrangements (including part-time options) may be considered depending on project and funding requirements.
