About this position
Luleå University of Technology, a rapidly growing institution with world-leading expertise in several research areas, invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in 6G satellite technologies and space systems sustainability. Located in Kiruna, Northern Sweden—a European space region—the Division of Space Technology collaborates with major players such as the Swedish Institute of Space Physics, EISCAT Scientific Association, and the Swedish Space Corporation. The division offers Master Degree programs in Space Science and Technology and conducts research in atmospheric science and space systems, supported by advanced laboratory facilities for rocket propulsion, small satellites, asteroid engineering, and space avionics.
The PhD project is part of the multidisciplinary competence center 'Sustainable Mobile Autonomous and Resilient 6G SatCom', established in 2025 in partnership with KTH, RISE, and industry leaders including Ericsson, Saab, Ovzon, Beyond Gravity, Forsway, Satcube, SSC, NorthernWaves, Primekey, Airforestry, PTS, EISCAT, Swedish Transport Administration, Forest Industries, regional authorities, Eutelsat-OneWeb, Airbus, Viasat, and Thales Alenia Space. The center aims to integrate land-based mobile communications and space-based satellite communications in 6G, focusing on sustainability, energy efficiency, reliability, resilience, system interoperability, and always-on artificial intelligence. Research will address hardware improvements for 6G devices and satellites, robust signal processing methods, network technology integration, and intelligent applications combining communication, localization, and remote sensing.
As a PhD candidate, you will join an interdisciplinary research group working on innovative methodologies for fast and low-cost validation and testing of 6G satellite technologies, as well as improved in-orbit servicing and maintenance capabilities for satellite constellations. The research will utilize simulations, testing facilities, and nano satellite platforms, and will be conducted in collaboration with institutional and industry partners. You are expected to perform both experimental and theoretical work, communicate your results at national and international conferences and in scientific journals, and may contribute to teaching within the department.
The position is fully funded for 4 years, with the possibility of up to 20% teaching and departmental duties. Placement is in Kiruna, with a flexible start date by agreement. Applicants must have a master's degree or equivalent in aerospace engineering or a related subject, and previous experience with small spacecraft (pico, nano, or micro satellites) in design, development, or operations. Strong written and oral communication skills in English are required. Application materials should include a CV, motivation letter, and verified diplomas and transcripts, written in English or Swedish. The closing date for applications is 28 May 2026. For further information, contact Head of Division Victoria Barabash or Chair Professor René Laufer.
