Description

Utrecht University’s Faculty of Science invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in AI and Data Science for Modelling and Analyzing Reading Text. This multidisciplinary research project addresses the profound impact of the digital era on reading and reading education, focusing on how artificial intelligence—especially generative AI—reshapes these processes. The successful candidate will join the Department of Information and Computing Sciences and the consortium 'Becoming Literate in a Digital Age', collaborating with experts from various disciplines, educational organizations, and reading specialists.

As a PhD candidate, you will develop and apply advanced AI and Data Science techniques, with a particular emphasis on causal modeling and causal learning, to investigate how children read and are taught to read in the digital age. You will analyze existing educational datasets to uncover patterns and structures relevant to reading and literacy. Key responsibilities include reviewing interdisciplinary literature, identifying suitable computational approaches, developing monitoring systems for educational data, and predicting the effects of educational interventions. You will also examine the impact of generative AI on reading processes and instructional methods.

Your research will contribute to the project’s objectives and culminate in a doctoral dissertation. You will actively participate in publishing and presenting your findings at international conferences and in peer-reviewed journals. The position offers excellent professional development opportunities, including participation in consortium activities, international summer schools, and workshops. You will also contribute to teaching and supervise AI-related thesis projects at both Bachelor’s and Master’s levels (10-15% of your time).

The Department of Information and Computing Sciences at Utrecht University is renowned for its research in computer science and information science, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and societal impact. The Intelligent Systems group, where you will be based, focuses on both fundamental and applied research in Artificial Intelligence. The department provides a dynamic, inclusive, and supportive work environment, encouraging personal initiative and curiosity.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field, with a solid understanding of AI concepts and techniques. Familiarity with causal modeling, causal learning, and generative AI is highly desirable. Strong English communication skills are essential, along with perseverance, a collaborative mindset, and commitment to the project’s research goals.

The position is initially for 18 months, with extension to a total of four years upon successful assessment. The gross monthly salary ranges from €3,059 to €3,881 (full-time), with additional benefits including 8% holiday pay, 8.3% year-end bonus, pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, flexible employment terms, and professional development support. Utrecht University also offers a variety of schemes for personal and professional growth, sports, and cultural activities.
